So how can you make homemade yogurt? First you'll need a pot that holds about 2 quarts, a cooking thermometer and an electric yogurt maker (or another way to maintain the temperature during fermentation). Make sure all equipment was thoroughly cleaned and dried. It is very important that the bacteria present only during fermentation, is what is introduced by the starter culture.

How To Make Yogurt
  1. 1. Add 1 liter of whole milk in a saucepan and heat until small bubbles appear around the outside of the pan (but do not boil).

  2. 2. Let the milk to cool down after removing the milk from heat. Cooling will be faster if you hold the pan in cold water.

  3. 3. When the milk temperature has dropped to between 110 and 115 F, take a cup of milk and add the yogurt culture. The simplest starter culture used is one quarter cup of yogurt commercial nature (it is important that it contains live cultures, however).

  4. 4. Mix in the starter until it is dissolved. This can now be added to the remaining hot milk.

  5. 5. Now in to the yogurt, add this mixture and stir it slowly.

  6. 6. It will be very important to maintain the right temperature of milk for the duration of the fermentation process. Depending upon Your room temperature yogurt may be ready with in 6-8 hours.

After the fermentation is completed and the yogurt is ready , place it in the freeze for about few hours before eating. This step is important because it stops or slows down the fermentation process. More fermentation is allowed to continue then it becomes thicker and the pie will be the final result. Yogurt should keep for about 10 days provided they are refrigerated. Instead of whole milk, you can also use low fat or fat-free milk.
